3 Reasons Why “Wanting Things to Stay the Same” Is impossible
You’ve said it, I’ve said it: “I just want things to stay the same.” But does it ever happen? Not really. Most of the people who come to therapy have tried keeping things how they were, but they couldn’t ,and they can’t stand the pain they’re in now.
The answer is undeniable, and it’s only one word:
change
Because something is always changing, staying the same is either misguided, impractical, or impossible. There are many reasons for this, but here are three:
- Your needs, desires, and capabilities change over time
- As you age, you are ruled by the different stages of life (each with its own challenges and rewards)
- As you or the world changes, what used to work now doesn’t, or what didn’t work in the past now does
The average person resists change and pays the price. But you’re better than that. You look ahead for possible changes. You plan what to do when it does. You ask yourself, “What change can I make that will make my life better?”
All this is obvious, and not that hard. And you’re the kind of person who will take care of things, now and always.
